Inspiring Learning, Valuing All

Rio Carnival comes to Rackheath Primary!

This week (Tuesday 22nd March) year 5 had a little taste of the Rio Carnival as they took part in their own South American Carnival day to finish their geography unit!

All of the children dressed up in bright and loud ‘carnival’ clothes to get in the mood for it…with some children, Finley Betts in particular, going all out with their outfits!

Activities the children took part in:

– Rio Carnival mask making,

– Samba dancing

– Samba music

– South American rainforest art

– South American food tasting (Locra – Butternut squash and Chorizo Stew)

A great day was had by all!! A massive thank you goes out to all involved that helped to make the day a HUGE success!

Here are a few photographs to show how much of a success was:

Curiosity Cafe in year 5

This morning parents were invited into year 5 to work alongside their children and learn a little about space – in particular, the different phases of the moon!

When you have a horde of unruly parents coming into the classroom the best idea is to think of an activity that will keep them engaged…and what better way to do this than to use biscuits!!

Today we used biscuits to show how the moon’s appearance chances as it orbits the Earth – and then we ate them!!

James ‘Egg’ Bond arrives in style!

During this term year 5 have been studying ‘forces’ in science and as part of that they have been learning about air resistance. To show their understanding they were set the challenge of trying to design and build a contraption that would allow James ‘Egg’ Bond to fall from the roof and land safely! Only one rule – forces had to be used!

As you can see from the photographs below we had some very ‘interesting’ ideas!!!

Unfortunately, not all of our James ‘Egg’ Bonds survived the fall (much to the delight of the children!)

ANGLO-SAXON DAY!!!

The Anglo-Saxons have invaded year 5…and they did it in style!

Today was our Year 5 Anglo-Saxon day where normal was thrown out of the window…it was a day focused on the lives of the people who helped shape the country we know today! The activities that we took part in today were:

– Creating clay coins with our own fictional Tribal symbols

– Cooking an Anglo-Saxon meal of Chicken Stew, Bread, and Stewed Apples

– Looking at the artifacts that have been left behind and creating our own

– Using Anglo-Saxon Runes to design door signs for our bedrooms

– Learning about Anglo-Saxon societies through role play (we were all given a person to be for the day e.g. Kings, Thanes, Freemen or Monks)

We had a great day and gained loads from it! The photographs only tell half the story!!!

What makes a good boat?

This week we have been looking at how the shape of a boat changes the effect of water resistance!

To do this the children children were set the challenge of designing and building a foil boat, of any shape, that can carry the highest number of marbles as possible. Below are our pictures that show our different boats!

We found out that the wider and longer the boat, the more marbles it will be able to carry (as long as the sides are strong enough!!) The is because it will create more water resistance or upthrust.

The new Y5 are here!!!

Hello to you all and welcome to year 5! We started the year off in style by enjoying our amazing Pirate ship that was installed during the summer! Just look at the absolute pleasure on our faces!! It is so good that even Mrs Goddard had to have a go!

Science

Today in Science we have been learning about the parts of a flower. Here you can see us dissecting flowers and labelling the different parts!

Numeracy Cafe

A couple of weeks ago year 5 had a maths café where parents came into our class and played lots of times table games.

These are some of the games our class played:

Bang bang: To play this game two people need to answer the times table sums as fast as they can; whoever says the answer first wins!

Times table bingo: Choose any six numbers (I wouldn’t recommend 13 or 17). Another person needs to call out times table sums (e.g.3×5). If you have the answer to the question on your sheet then cross it out – the first person to have all their numbers crossed out wins.

Times table count up: Chose a times table; next everybody needs to count up to three numbers of the times table. Whoever reaches the tenth number of the times table is out. Keep on playing this game until only one person is standing – that person is the winner!
